Why it’s important to use a professional photographer for your portraits

In this hi-tech digital age, everyone’s a photographer. Whether they are using the latest iPhone, or an expensive DSLR, the skills of a professional photographer are often ignored, many times until it’s too late.  How many couples have entrusted their wedding photographs to a friend or cousin with a “good camera” only to regret it later. You don’t get that day back.

The same goes for portrait photographs.  When you want professional portraits taken, whether it’s for your newborn baby, a family shoot or even a few friends having some fun, use a tried and tested professional, the results will speak for themselves.

Choosing the right photographer

  • Choose someone who is a full time professional with a large portfolio
  • Choose someone who is recommended and whose work you have seen and liked
  • If photographer has a professional studio with all the necessary backdrops and lighting – that can make a big difference.
  • Chat to the photographer first, explain what you want and see if you are on the same page.
  • Price is normally a reflection on the quality and service you will receive.

There are numerous benefits to using a professional photographer:

Proper equipment
Using the correct camera, lens and lighting, with an appropriate backdrop is critical for good results

Proper look
A professional will make sure you look and dress right. Wearing solid colours works far better than stripes and patterns for example, and doesn’t date as quickly. They will also advise you on hair and makeup if need be.

Model direction
A good photographer will understand your needs, and can gently manipulate you and/or others into the right positions, often making posed photographs look natural.

Post production
Touching up your photographs afterward will perfect them without correcting them. This is not changing how you look – just making sure the final results are as good as they can be.

Value for money
It’s not often you will use a professional photographer, unless you are model of course, so when you do, make sure they are really professional, not just in name. Using a pro will give you results that you will be proud to share with the world, print and hang in your living room. These will stand out from the thousands of Facebook and Instagram shots you already have.

Using a professional photographer is not something you do every day, but when you do you’ll be glad you decided to capture this time in your life properly. Walking away with a beautiful framed photograph, or acrylic or canvas piece, means you can appreciate the moment for a lifetime, and family and friends can also enjoy them when they visit your home. In these digital times, it’s easy to just store photos on your phones and computers, but it’s the printed photographs and wall pieces that will stand the test of time and add value to your home.
