Capturing milestones with your family is important. What better way to celebrate the birth of a new baby, close relatives visiting, a big birthday, or any other important event than with photographs featuring your entire family? However, we know organising a large group of people can be tricky! Our studio team have put together a list of tips on how to organise a stress-free, fun family photo shoot.
Coordinate Your Schedules
We know that getting the whole family in the same place at the same time can be difficult to organise in between school, work, sports and other commitments. Talk to your family about a day that works best for everyone. If you have school aged kids then the school holidays are the perfect time for this! The photography studio team will help you in securing a time and date that works best for you and your family. You might even like to make it a special occasion by taking the day off work. This way you can take your time getting ready and you can spend some quality family time after the photo session.
Pick a Family Photo Shoot Team Leader
Who is the most organised member of your family? Ask them to be your family photo shoot team leader! This member will be your family’s main contact with the photographer and studio team. This will avoid confusion and make sure that everyone is on the same page. This person will be responsible for relaying the details of the photo shoot to the rest of the family and can ask any questions you might have. You might even want to start a family group chat so that you have all the information in one place.
Keep Your Outfits Simple
Keep it simple! We know that Granddad loves his outrageous t-shirts, but throw that in the mix with your aunt’s bright blue dress, and your cousins’ yellow headband and the colours can be overwhelming. We recommend wearing something simple in a similar style or colouring. This will make sure that everyone’s outfit compliments each others. You might also like to bring along a prop or a second outfit that captures your personality like a sports uniform for that fun, eye catching panorama shot. Your photographer can talk you through these decisions to make sure that everyone feels confident and happy with their outfit choice before the day.
Keep an Open Mind
While you might be there for the special occasion, it is a great opportunity to have some other amazing couple, kids, family and pet photographs taken at the same time. Talk to the photography team before the photo shoot about each family member that will be attending. This way the photographer can plan out your photo shoot to capture a whole variety of photos that the whole family will love.
Celebrate the Milestone
Make sure you tell the studio team what you’re celebrating! This will help your photographer plan your photo shoot to make sure they capture all of the special connections between family members and focus on what makes this event special. You might even like to bring in some props to help showcase or celebrate the event or something that your family loves doing together.
Don’t Forget Your Four-Legged Family Members
Make sure you bring the whole family along including your pets! We know how special they are to the family so don’t leave them out of the day. Just make sure you have some treats on hand to help them pose for the camera.
Most importantly- have fun! Your family photo shoot is as much about having fun on the day as it is about the beautiful photographs you will end up with. Having snacks on hand and making sure you’ve got enough time left on your parking will help you relax and have an amazing experience with your family.
